I find myself in a somewhat ironic position. I recently began my cinema classes here at John Brown University, and I now find myself so engulfed in them that I am unable to devote as much time as I would like to my blog... which is about cinema.
Nevertheless, we soldier on. I now write a semi-weekly review column for JBU's newspaper, the "Threefold Advocate." I will post all of these as I write them. They are, in many cases, just the beginning of discussion points I have for most of these films, and as such I will probably follow up on my reviews at certain points in the future. The "Tree of Life" review I have posted below this advisory is my first official contribution.
I also am pleased to announce a brand new kind of analytical discussion - the "Talk-Through"! Ideally, I would love to write a full analytical post/essay for every good movie I see. However, I physically cannot fit this and my school schedule into the 16 or so waking hours I have each day. Occasionally, however, I do have time for movie-watching on my own. And when I do watch a great film, one that would benefit from some explanation or explication, I will watch and simultaneously comment on great techniques and themes that I see. Those of you loyal followers with computers and determination can follow along with my commentary as you watch on your own, and see what I'm speaking about.
Sound good? Good. I'll be in touch. Talk-Through #1 will be posting shortly. Ever wonder what the crap "2001: A Space Odyssey" meant? So did I... and then I started thinking and reading about it. I've developed my own thesis, and there are far too many details to include in one concise essay. So get ready for a trip into space (and God knows where else) with the legendary Stanley Kubrick. Coming soon!
